Finding Your Target Audience
If you don’t know who your target audience is we have a problem.
Because if you don´t know who you are writing to, how are you supposed to write great content that covers your readers’ needs?
Guessing that you already have a niche in mind I want to show you how you can find the content your target Audience is looking for. And for that reason, you should be writing about that content too.
Note: There is a big difference between getting inspired and knowing what your audience needs help with, and copying what other bloggers are writing. Don’t be that person that copies other people’s content. This Post is mere to help you find ideas and inspiration. Please think of it that way. Nobody likes to read a copy.
Where can you find your target audience?
I want to show you my five main sites to find content related to my niche. In these sites, you can find keywords that will help you create and inspiring your new content. Some of them will show you how many times a particular post has been shared and on which platform (Facebook, Twitter…). So here they are:
- Facebook Groups
Buzzsumo: The Tattletale.
👉Paid subscription and way too expensive. However, the free tool, even though is very limited, will cover the main points of our search.👈
If you go to Buzzsumo.com you can enter keywords related to your niche and figure out what articles are being shared the most.
Here is an example of my search for Content Curation:
I like the title of the third result: The Definitive Guide to Content Curation: Strategies, Tips, and Tools from HootSuite.
I can see that it has a total of 3k shares. Really Good! The highest amount of shares is from Twitter and LinkedIn.
These results tell me that it will be an interesting topic to write about because a lot of people are interested in it. But wait a minute! Do you write about this kind of topics on your blog?
Yes: Great! You can go ahead and start formulating a possible outline for a blog post.
Remember: Get inspired, don’t copy! There is a very fine line there.
No: You have to choose keywords related to your niche to make sure you are reaching the right audience. It doesn’t make sense to write about content curation if your blog is about recipes right?
Use your keywords wisely, Buzzsumo has a 14- day free trial (no credit card required) and it will give you access to all the tools in the premium version. However, their free version is very limited.
Pro Tip: I recommend signing up for the free trial once you know who your target audience is, what niche are you writing in and what keywords you should use. This way you will make a smart use of the premium features for free 🙂
With the premium version, you can even see who shared the content. Now you know why I call it the Tattletale 🙂

Reddit: The Forum
👉Free to use!👈
I use Reddit to get ideas directly from my target audience.
In Reddit, you can search for your target audience or your niche.
This is what I do:
My Target audience is new and intermediate bloggers that need help to either get started or a boost in something they already have some knowledge on.
So when I go to Reddit I search for Bloggers. Why not new bloggers? Because I find out more results if I type bloggers and I get so much more insights this way.
These are my three main results. I am obviously interested in the two first results so I am going to pick the first one and check it out.
Tip: Right next to the subscribe green button you can see how many subscribers that forum has and for how long it has been running. In this case, we will go with the 1st one because it has many more subscribers than the 2nd option.
Here are some of the most commented threads in this forum:
This question got a lot of replies, 89 to be exact. The rest of posts or questions get a maximum of 20 comments the most. When I clicked on the question, it took me inside the original question and it shows all the replies that comment got.
I could see how many people shared their sources of traffic like Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, Twitter…
So, if I was looking for something to write about I could talk about the main sources of traffic for blogs and go over and beyond by making an in-depth step by step guide of the ones I personally use to bring traffic and how I do it. You see? I have taken someone’s question, I created a topic and I will go in depth on it like if I was answering her personally.
If your niche is Paleo recipes, you can type that on the search bar and go to a forum where people comment and share what kinds of recipes. Then you can figure out what the people that use those recipes will like to cook next, or have doubts about.
Really easy to use and free resource to brainstorm topic ideas.

Quora: Q & A
Quora is like an encyclopedia but better, because is made out of people questions and curiosity plus answers from experts on specific topics.
How can this help me, you might think.
Well, my friend, you can either ask and get some answers, or you can start building up your name by answering those questions you know the answer for. You can help people that have questions and doubts in your fields of expertise. You might refer to helpful resources and even to your blog. But don’t get spammy, this site is not to brag or to promote yourself. Is a space to get real connections, explanations and answers.
Same thing for the keyword search. You can look up for your specific keywords and see what people in your niche are having difficulty with. Then you can start a blog post about that matter, go back to that question and answer the question by explaining your answer and telling the person that you have written a whole post about that topic in case they want to check it out.

Facebook Groups: The intimacy
👉 Free (most of the times, you will find some exclusive groups where you need to pay a membership, not the case of this example) 👈
Facebook groups are an amazing way to find your target audience and start a conversation with them. But not only that, you will find a community of bloggers with similar interest and goals as you, and that is invaluable. Blogging can become a solitary task, don’t be antisocial and start conversations with other like.minded bloggers, you will be surprised at what can come up out of it.
Back to our target audience, Facebook groups is a must tool to use. Find the groups where your audience hangs out. If you are a fashion blogger go to the fashion groups, find out what the pain points of your audience are. Have conversations, learn what they like to see in blogs, what they will like to find, what are they looking for. But don’t stop there… keep coming back, introduce yourself if you haven’t done yet. Create relationships and even find other bloggers in your niche. This can help you in future collaborations.
Then, take all that information and create outstanding posts that solve those pain points, that talk about those tendencies they wanted to know about, etc…
Come back to those group where you found your inspiration and share with them your brand new piece of content (make sure to follow the group’s rules, some groups have special thread days where you can share your content).
